In the Contemporary Art Collection the dominant artistic attitude is factual, objective and conceptual. The starting point is the work of the artist couple Bernd (1931–2007) and Hilla (1934–2015) Becher. Besides the Bechers’ documentary practice, the collection includes other influential positions of serial and project-related photography.
Furthermore, the MGKSiegen owns important works of video and installation art. Here, too, the focus is on artists who broke down genre boundaries during the 1960s. They are juxtaposed with works by younger artists who question the contemporary world using similar artistic practices.
Another focus of the collection are works and groups of works by Peter Piller, Diango Hernández, Vajiko Chachkhiani and Lena Henke–all recipients of the Rubens Prize Promotional Award from the City of Siegen.
