The private Lambrecht-Schadeberg Collection came into being in the early 1990s and has been shown in the Museum für Gegenwartskunst Siegen since 2001. The collection’s purpose is to gather together important paintings, drawings, prints, as well as photographs and sculptural pieces by all the winners of the Rubens Prize endowed by the City of Siegen.
In the meantime, the collection has grown to hold over 300 works. The selection of works is oriented on the underlying aim to collect pieces from different phases of work representative of the respective prizewinners’ œuvres. As a permanent loan, the Lambrecht-Schadeberg Collection is presented in constantly changing exhibitions. Works by all the Rubens Prize winners are on show continually.

Since 1957, the Rubens Prize from the City of Siegen has been awarded to painters and illustrators in recognition of their life's work. 14 artists have received the accolade to date: Hans Hartung (1957), Giorgio Morandi (1962), Francis Bacon (1967), Antoni Tàpies (1972), Fritz Winter (1977), Emil Schumacher (1982), Cy Twombly (1987), Rupprecht Geiger (1992), Lucian Freud (1997), Maria Lassnig (2002), Sigmar Polke (2007), Bridget Riley (2012), Niele Toroni (2017) and Miriam Cahn (2022).
