Artist in Residence Siegen

Workshop Talk with Susanne Kriemann

The multi-award-winning artist Susanne Kriemann is coming to the crowning city as part of the residency program of the University of Siegen and the Museum of Contemporary Art Siegen. This marks the second round of the "Artist in Residence Siegen" program.

The artist was born in Erlangen in 1972 and lives in Berlin. She is a professor of Code&Image at the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design. Her work is characterized by field research, archive research and experimentation with materials. She examines the medium of photography in a socio-historical and archival context. Ecological issues are always the focus of her work. She deals with the visualization of the hidden and dedicates herself to topics such as radioactivity, resource extraction and archaeology. Her work is characterized by a deep connection to nature. In her photographic projects, she uses chemical processes that can be traced back to human intervention in nature. The artist integrates diverse organic materials such as wool, weeds, bones and fungi.

Kriemann reflects on the world as an analog "recording system" for man-made processes. With her research project in Siegen, she wants to take a look at the extensive ruderal vegetation in urban spaces, i.e. the plant life on unused or abandoned areas, in collaboration with scientists from the University of Siegen and urban society. They are interested in the peculiarities of plants that grow along highways, for example. Imaging methods with plant developers, i.e. plant substances that react to light, are being researched and combined with digital, intelligent media.

On Wednesday, April 10, 2024, the artist will present her work and her plans for the residency for the first time in Siegen at a public workshop talk under the working title "Hey Bitterkraut, dear cyborg!".
