Fach Werk Musik

Performance of architecture, light, video and music

Half-timbering is a characteristic feature of Siegerland architecture, and half-timbering is a characteristic theme of the photographic work of Bernd and Hilla Becher, whose rigorous view of the structure of house façades focused on the rationality and functionality of these architectures. An exhibition of photographs by Becher student Laurenz Berges at MGKSiegen now opens up a completely different perspective: Berges has photographed the Mudersbach half-timbered house of Bernd Becher's grandparents from the inside, rooms in which time seems to have stood still for decades, furniture, pictures, lamps, honey jars, a jigsaw puzzle that has been started, views through the windows to the outside. His works thematise transience and how we deal with it, "holding and fading", as the title of the exhibition puts it.

In a seminar of the subjects architecture and music at the University of Siegen, students led by professors Ulrich Exner and Martin Herchenröder dealt with the subject of half-timbering, the house in Mudersbach, the photographs by Bernd and Hilla Becher and Laurenz Berges and analytically sharpened their view of structure and experience, inside and outside. On this evening, the university analysis will culminate in a joint, interdisciplinary artistic response, a performance of architectural installation, video, light and music on Siegen's central square.
