Reading pictures: August Sander's Westerwald spaces
Reading and lecture by Hanns-Josef Ortheil
The author Hanns-Josef Ortheil has told his audience about his Westerwald origin in many of his novels and essays. August Sander and his photographies play a major role in them. In his lecture on "August Sander's Westerwald Spaces" he asks about the archetypes of his photographic memories, in which Sander's own family pictures are overlaid and interpreted. He is referring to his book “Unterwegs im Westerwald” ("Under way in the Westerwald"), which has just been published by Insel-Verlag.
Hanns-Josef Ortheil, born in Cologne in 1951, is a writer, pianist, and professor of literary writing at the University of Hildesheim. He has published over seventy books since 1979 (see www.hanns-josef-ortheil.de). He has worked with the photographs of August Sander for many years and has published several essays about them. He lives in Wissen/Sieg, Cologne and Stuttgart.
